Beautiful old barn with new appeal

Mr & Mrs Berrisford live in a stunning barn in Cheshire which is over 350 years old. While their home is very beautiful, they found that it was quite dark, as at the time when it was built, windows were avoided to keep the livestock warm.

Working with their local Ultraframe installer, Cheadle Glass, the couple have undertaken a stunning project to bring light into their home and give it a modern twist, using the Livinroof solid roof system from Ultraframe.

Explaining more, Mr Berrisford said: “We have used Cheadle Glass many times, in three different homes over 30 years and in various investment and relatives’ properties. They have always done a very professional job and are open, honest and competitively priced. We wanted to bring light into our home, while also giving it a new modern look. With Livinroof, we liked the fact that you could implement it in a bespoke fashion - adding just the required amount of light into the property, exactly where you need it. We were also attracted by the way it looked.”

 “Massively brighter”

Two lean-to sections of their original tiled house roof were replaced with Livinroofs – each with full-length glazed panels to bring much-needed natural light in the rooms below. These can be inserted anywhere in a Livinroof – even on styles with shaped glazing. 

In the section that is now a large open-plan kitchen-diner, six glass panels were incorporated, bringing in a huge amount of light to a living space that has become the hub of the home. This area also benefitted from contemporary lift and slide doors in anthracite grey to complement the new Livinroof. The new roof and large modern doors have completely reinvigorated the space-filling it with huge amounts of natural light and bringing it bang up to date, while still retaining the roof style of the original barn. 

In the roof over the lounge, four full-length glass panels were used – lined up perfectly with the windows below. This area is a peaceful haven for relaxing that has also really benefitted from the huge amounts of additional light. 

Commenting about the transformation of the two areas, Mr Berrisford said: “Our kitchen diner is now a family space and it’s sometimes difficult to occupy any other part of the house! We use this space for big gatherings or parties, breakfast, reading the newspaper – it’s very flexible as a living space. The light from the panels in the roof and the large sliding doors really bring the outside in (a bit of a corny phrase but true!) and we can now really enjoy our view. It’s massively brighter – as is our lounge, which we now use as something of a place to escape for peace.”
